How to Write an Informative Essay
An informative essay is a valuable publication which is an original research article. It is the primary source of scientific literature that provides new, unpublished insights. The author conducts research on a specific subject through experiments, questionnaires, observations, and so on, then goes on to report the results in the paper.
What is an Informative Essay?
For a manuscript to be considered an informative essay, it must meet certain standards, some of which are outlined below.
- It must be written by the researcher who conducted the research.
- It must have a detailed description of the hypothesis or research question, purpose, or method.
- The result must be reported.
- The results have been interpreted and their significance has been discussed.

How to write the informative essay
Writing an essay with research that provides new insights can be a daunting task. At first, most researchers are at a loss because they don’t know what to study and how to proceed and are confused without any conviction. The important steps in writing an informative essay are:
1. Choose a research question
To start your research, you must first decide on a research question. To do this, you must read a considerable amount of literature published in your field of study. Get in the habit of reading scientific literature on a regular basis. This will give you an idea of what the challenges are to be solved in your area of interest. After thinking about these issues, talk with your advisor before deciding which ones your paper will address. Before deciding on a research question, you need to think about two things: your interests and whether your research idea can be realized.
The superiority or inferiority of the title is very important in terms of making many people aware of the results. This is because many readers place premium on the informative essay by looking at the title alone and may chose not to read it if it is deemed worthless from the get-go. A good title is one that accurately reflects the content of the article and contains the keywords. In recent times, declarative sentences and interrogative sentences have been frequently used with an emphasis on comprehensibility and appeal to readers. However, too sensational expressions are perceived as hype and often get a backlash from reviewers.
2. Perform a literature search
Once the research question is decided, it is necessary to conduct a detailed literature quest systematically. You can explore all the literature related to your research theme in sequence, or you can start from the latest literature and then go back to the archived literature. You may also need to follow the important citations you find along the way. Ensure to use not only books and journals, but related materials such as government reports and online databases as well. Keeping a search record is a great way to write references and citations in your paper.
3. Compose your Informative Essay
Informative essays are usually written according to a particular structure. The most common paper consists of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
Introduction: Write the background and purpose in an easy-to-understand and solid manner so that a lay man can understand it. In addition, list conventional research examples and clarify the position of research. The originality that influences the value of an informative essay is almost fixed at this point. That is, if the problem setting is novel and targeted, it can completely attract the reader.
If the purpose of the research is not clear, the conclusions cannot be verified, and the research will be ruined. For this reason, it is necessary to clearly indicate it by itemizing it. Another effective way is to take the form of questioning or presenting a hypothesis. Making a working hypothesis has an important meaning in the process of planning and summarizing the results.
Method: Here the outline of the experiment or observation, the measuring instrument used, the analysis method is all necessary information. However, excessive descriptions impair the comprehensibility, so the information to be described should be carefully selected
It is effective to add subheadings to clarify the composition. The order of subheadings should be reasonably determined in consideration of the ease of understanding and explanation of the content.
Result: Depending on the length and the tediousness of developing the logic without interpretation, it can be summarized as “results and discussion”. However, it is usually preferable to clearly separate the objectively recognized facts from the authors’ interpretations and claims.
Figures play a central role in the results chapter. The core of the paper is almost complete by picking up important figures, describing the objective facts they show, and supplementing some explanations that connect the figures.
The selection criterion for the figure is whether it is necessary for the consideration (verification of the hypothesis) in the next chapter. Even if the figure shows an interesting result, it is not necessary to show it if the relationship with the main line is weak. If the figure is worth publishing, it is appropriate to correct the hypothesis or reorganize it as a separate essay. However, in thesis and reports where there are no strict restrictions on the number of papers, tables summarizing raw data and their graphical representations are also valuable as primary materials and do not need to be omitted.
Consideration: It is the most essential part of the paper, and it is also the place where the true value is questioned. It should be described in a coherent manner, focusing on the verification of hypotheses, without blurring the issue with irrelevant descriptions. If the purpose is itemized, it is helpful to have a separate section for each. Each section consists of three elements:
- Summary explanation
Reaffirm the hypothesis to be tested and declare to the reader what to discuss.
- Development of discussion
Based on the facts shown in the results, rationally develop the discussion. It is also useful to refer to previous studies as necessary and discuss the generality and peculiarities of the study results. Poor reasoning should be kept to a minimum, but it is worth mentioning if it points to the direction of future research. Never make a mere claim that is not related to the result. It is also not desirable that data not shown in the previous chapter suddenly appears. It is effective to show a new figure that fits the discussion path, but the details of the data on which it is based should be given in the previous chapter.
- Closing
Emphasize the point and make a final decision on the truth of the hypothesis. Expressing the derived new concept in a punchy-easy to understand and has an impact approach.
Finally, write a concise and concrete conclusion corresponding to the purpose. The text should be largely consistent with the conclusion of each section of the discussion, but it should be accurate, if repeated, as many readers try to understand the content by reading only the introduction and conclusions. Of course, it doesn’t have to be the same word for word.
4. Edit the Essay
Once the first draft is completed, repeat the elaboration sufficiently. In addition to checking for deficiencies in literature citations and errors in mathematical formulas, it is often noticed that the text expression is inappropriate by reading it back after a while. In an informative essay, it is desirable to use high-quality expressions instead of simple phrases, but profound expressions and sentences lacking smoothness are not preferable because they hinder understanding. After you optimize your write-up, have the collaborators and academic advisors read it. They will not only point out areas that need correction and give advice on revisions but will also teach you various rules for writing an essay.
