If you have reached the final stretch of graduation, it is time to think about possible topics for your History final project. The area offers several possibilities – and, precisely because of having so many options, students are in doubt about which topic to choose.

The degree course in History lasts three to four years. During this period, students learn about teaching methodology, Ancient, Medieval, Modern History, Pre-Colonial and Colonial Africa. At the end of college, to obtain the degree, it is necessary to fulfil the workload of the course and deliver a research paper.

In this article, we would look at some topics you can work on for your final project.

Tips for choosing a research topic

Indeed, it is important to point out that researchers can even give generic names to academic works, however, what makes the research different from the others is the level of depth, the purpose of the study and the originality of the topic. A good research topic is proportional, has academic value, is neither too extensive nor restricted, it is clear and well delimited. Below are some tips for choosing the right topic:

Consider interests and directions

The student is free to choose the topic of his research paper, considering his preferences and experiences throughout the undergraduate course. In case of doubt, he can accept his supervisor’s suggestion l, without losing sight of personal interests.

Check the studies that already exist

As soon as the topic is defined, the researcher must know the state of the topic, that is, what has already been published by other researchers on the subject. In doing so, he does not run the risk of presenting as “new” something that is already known in the academic community. Databases and digital repositories are powerful sources of research. So, use Google Scholar and Scielo.

Find gaps

Controversial and obscure areas are engines for successful research. Based on the bibliography consulted, check which aspects of the topic have not yet been reported.

Specify with time and space

When a research topic seems very broad, the student must specify the context, that is, place it in time and space. Consider a history student interested in investigating the role of the Colonial masters in the period of military dictatorship. To specify the approach, he can consider only a few years of the period and a location.

Example: The role of colonial masters in the military dictatorship in Nigeria (between 1967 and 1977).
