Abstract: | This annotated bibliography on Southern Bantu praise poetry from South Africa lists 180 titles, arranged according to language: General, Ndebele, Ngoni, Northern Sotho, Shona, Southern Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Xhosa, and Zulu. The bibliography proper is preceded by an introduction on Southern Bantu praise poetry and the history of its collection from 1842 onwards. It is a revised version of a longer publication that was issued in the ‘Discussion Papers in the African Humanities’ series, published by the African Studies Center, Boston University, in 1999. With two exceptions, theses and dissertations have not been included. |
