A Swiss Family Firm in West Africa: A. Brunnschweiler and Co., 1929-1959

History of the firm A. Brunnschweiler & Co. 1929-1959, a textile firm owned by two Swiss families, Brunnschweiler and Frhlich, and highly specialised in ‘Real Madras’ and ‘Imitation Madras’. Although it had only a small turnover, the company’s history illustrates the commercial changes in the Third World in the period 1890 to 1940 and Europe’s role as intermediary between Asia and Africa, in this case between producers in India and consumers in West Africa, as well as the obstacles encountered by a firm wanting to enter the importing and exporting business in West Africa after 1920. Notes.
