Abstract: | Purpose is to examine the status of adult literacy in today’s Ethiopia. Attempted is to isolate what factors facilitate or hinder the spread of adult literacy. Also an attempt is made to test the validity of some hypotheses or assumptions concerning the ways and means through which adult literacy is spread. Attention is given to the socio-linguistic structure in Ethiopia, especially the settlement pattern and the languages spoken in the country. Ref., tables: 1. Literacy in rural areas; 2. Literacy in some cities and towns in Ethiopia; 3a. Distribution of male literate by age group in some urban centres; 3b. Distribution of female literate by age in some urban centres. |
