Abstract: | This article discusses the role agriculture can play in the economic development of Nigeria. It is, in a way, a rebuttal to Prof. S.A. Aluko’s article ‘The Case for Rapid Industrialisation of Nigeria’ (Quart. Jl. Administration, 4 (1969/70), 3, p. 193-215). But it goes beyond this, as some suggestions are made for the overall economic development of the country. The discussion, in its first stage deals with the contributions of agriculture to economic development. This stage consists of a literature review and an examination of experiences in other countries. The second stage is concerned with an assessment of the status of agriculture in Nigeria today. The third stage comprises a discussion of some strategies for economic development in Nigeria. Notes, tables. |
