Abstract: | Tanzanian government policies, in the spirit of ‘Education for Self-Reliance’, have helped the nation to direct its educational system more to the needs of the vast majority who do not go beyond primary school than to the needs of the tiny population who do. The author assesses Tanzania’s progress in achieving such goals, with the discussion organised according to the levels of the school system, viz. adult education, primary education, secondary education, higher education.
