Abstract: | The paper presents detailed case material on church fission among a groups of Yoruba migrants in a town in Northern Ghana. The material is analysed in terms of the tensions inherent between missionary church doctrine on the one hand, and the location of the church in a group of culturally and socially exclusive migrants on the other. The main issues are seen as the function of the church for the individuals who made up the congregation, and the strain between the developing church organization, and the developing social scructure of the migrant community.
