Co-optation and control: Tucsa and the African unions in the sixties

First the author looks at the situation of trade unions in the fifties to give some brief indication of the milieu out of which Tucsa emerged. Then she describes the strategies adopted by Tucsa in the 1960s to protect its members in the face of factors which were beginning to undermine the privileged position of white and to some extent coloured and Asian workers. One central theme is Tucsa’s approach to African workers as this was a central element of its functioning during the period. Notes, photo.
