Abstract: | In Cameroun, although enrolment levels have risen remarkably since independence, there are still large inequalities between the sexes. These are variously manifested from one region to another, between urban and rural areas, ethnic groups, and social classes. Sexual inequalities can be observed in access to primary education, ‘drop-out’ rates, and failure to enter secondary school. The present discussion of education as a specific locus of sexual inequality is based largely on a study of primaryschool leavers and secondary entrants in Yaound, undertaken during the academic years 1974-5 and 1975-6.
