‘Home Grown’? Austerity Measures: The Case of Zimbabwe

Within Zimbabwe the role of the IMF in shaping economic policy, and the extent to which current austerity measures are indeed ‘home grown’ has been the subject of controversy and even bitter recriminations. The author assumes that the Zimbabwean austerity programme is indeed ‘home grown’. It is in this context that he examines the economic policy measures for economic stabilisation, introduced by the government of Zimbabwe. Whether these policies were indeed ‘home made’ or not, they bear an uncanny resemblance to the standard IMF programmes imposed in many other Third World countries. – Notes, sum. in French, tab.
