Abstract: | Aim of the article is to explain how Italy became involved in Ethiopia, who the ‘agents of imperialism’ were, how the Ethiopians reacted to the appearance of Italians in northeastern Africa, and what all this means for the traditional accounts of Italian imperialism. Focus is on the activities and ideas of Italians in Ethiopia who provided their metropolitan homeland with the information, that became the framework within which Italian imperialism was to develop.
