Abstract: | The role of Meroe as a centre of dispersal of the techniques of iron working through Africa has become considered with greater care. This paper attempts to summarize earlier knowledge, to describe what the recent excavations at Meroe have found that is relevant to the theme, and to make some tentative assessment of evidence for the origins of iron working in the African continent. Discussion (p. 43-49), fig. (See also the next paper by R.F. TYLECOTE, ‘Metal working at Meroe, Sudan’, p. 29-42). |
