Abstract: | This paper does not study the actual socialist policies of the Tanzanian Government but the focus is single-mindedly upon Nyerere’s ideas on Tanzania’s transition to socialism. The purpose to understand these ideas in their own terms rather than to assess the extent to which they are compatible with other socialist theories of the transition to socialism. Nyerere’s strategy for this transition is examined under three headings: the promotion of greater equality, the creation of a socialist environment and the enhancement of democratic participation.
