Odinga and the Purpose of Independence: Not Yet Uhuru

The book ‘Not yet Uhuru’ by oginga odinga is very important for understanding the development of nationalism in Kenya. It is at once a critique of this nationalism and attempt by O. to reconcile himself with the future classes. To O., the struggle for independence was a process of structural transformation, the creation of a new institutional base and the permeation of these institutions with a new social ethic. Seen in this light, O. contends that the Kenyan nationalist struggle did not measure up to this task and that Uhuru has not yet come. This article gives a detailed description of the contents of the book.
