Abstract: | Recently three books on the history of the Maghrib have been published: Ch.-A. Julien, History of North Africa from the Arab conquest to 1830, edited and revised by R. le Tourneau (English translation by J. Petrie and edited by C. C. Stevart. London, 1970); J.M. Abun-Nasr, A History of the Maghrib (Cambridge, 1971); C.H. Churchill, La vie de Abd-el-Kader; translated by M. Habart. Algiers, S.N.E.D. (originally C.H. Churchill’s life of ‘Abd al-Qadir, first published in 1867). Brelt takes the publication of these books as an opportunity to re-examine the interpretations that have been placed on the history of the Maghrib from the time of Ibn Khaldun onwards.
