Sex discrimination after death: an example from mortuary advertisements in African newspapers

Two major propositions are advanced. First, that mortuary advertisements have become a significant aspect of peoples’ public expressions of their sorrow in Nigeria and Ghana. Second, that in mortuary advertisements expressions of bereavement reflect an reinforce traditional male preferences in both societies. To test these propositions the author analyses mortuary and memorial advertisements in the ‘Ghanaian Times’ and ‘Daily Times’ of Nigeria. The analysis includes the relative use of photographs, the sex of advertisers and their relationship to the deceased, as well as the amount of column centimetre space. Ref. tab.
