This collective volume presents a profile of women in Sudan based on statistical indicators along the gender empowerment measurement. The empowerment indicators used pertain to demography, health, educational attainment, economic participation and employment, political rights, political participation and decisionmaking positions held, participation in peace and peacebuilding, engagement in civil organizations, and women specific institutions in government and nongovernment bodies. Factors that influence the profile are analysed and strategies to close the gender gaps and enhance women’s positioning are presented. To contextualize the profile and the agenda, the volume includes an introductory chapter about Sudan, and two chapters mapping Sudanese feminism and the contemporary women’s movement, and the cultural context that impacts on women’s position in society.
