Technology Policy and Planning in the Informal Sector: The Case of Food, Agriculture and Energy in Tanzania

Discussion of the actual and potential role of metal-working activities within the informal sector in Tanzania. The main problems faced by metalworking in both the formal and the informal sectors are the lack of appropriate tools, equipment, skills, expertise, materials, and funds. The government has taken a number of steps to deal with these problems, but so far they have been concentrated on the formal sector. The author outlines broad directions for government policy and action with respect to metalworking activities in the informal sector. Bibliogr., sum. in French.
