Dube (born in Natal, in 1871), whose life both expresses and reflects some of the complexities of the interaction of the growing union-wide political economy, the Natal sub-system and African po-litical consciousness. Aim is to provide a basis to understand the role of the first generation of Congress leaders of which be was so prominent an example.
