The coup d’Etat of May 13th, 1978, when Mr. Ali Soilih, President of the Comoro Republic, and his government were overthrow by a group of mercenaries, put an end to an original experiment in development. Since the exclusion of the Comorian delegation from the 1978 summit meeting of the OAU, held in Khartoum, a shroud has fallen over the political, social and economic problems of this archipelago, henceforth silenced. It is the author’s belief that the present government will nevertheless be obliged to reconsider the path chosen by Mr. A. Soilih as perhaps the only viable option available to those who wish to save the country from its present state of socio-econcmic underdevelopment. Purpose of this article is, essentially, to define the socio-economic situation prevalent in the Comoro Republic, a situation rendered all the more difficult due to the various disorders, particularly an agricultural unbalance, which have plagued the country since independence on July 6th, 1975.
