The compromising role of Inkatha

Under the leadership of Buthelezi, Inkatha is being groomed for an ‘internal settlement in South Africa on the same lines as those being attempted in Zimbabwe and Namibia. The present article examines the origin and role of Inkatha in the South African struggle for liberation. Originally a cultural movement founded in 1928 to assist in the preservation of the Zulu heritage, Inkatha is now a historically outdated organisation which has been revived and gradually reorganised since 1972 in order to safeguard and perpetuate the Bantustan policy and to entrench Buthelezi’s position in KwaZulu.
