Abstract: | G. Stadler in ‘The demand for money in South Africa’ (S. Afr. J. Econ., 49(1981), 2, p. 145-152), and E. Contogiannis & M.A. Shahi in ‘The demand for money and inflationary expectations in South Africa, 1965-80’ (S. Afr. J. Econ., 50(1982), 1, p. 26/34) offer some intriguing results and stress the need for further research but show a neglect for some premises on which the present author bases his enquiry. His methodological standpoint is illustrated by calculations presented in the sections: Introduction – A starting point and perspective on earlier studies – Towards a more general specification.
