The Egyptian national consciousness

The Egyptian national consciousness is not yet stabilised; its image remains blurred and uncertain for the majority of the people. Definition of the Egyptian national consciousness is no easy undertaking because of the great antiquity, scope and wealth of Egypt’s cultural heritage. But this wealth will give to a comprehensive definition of the national awareness a value to which other nations with a less rich heritage could not lay claim. The problem is to reconcile the Pharaonic and the Arab heritages, the Christian and the Muslim contributions; to find a common measure between the most ancient human civilization and the most arduous modern problems; to adapt a traditional character deeply rooted in the people to the rhythm of scientific and technological developments. The country’s future depends on the solutions that will be found for these problems. The special rle that is incumbent upon Egypt is to be the link between Arab countries on one hand, and between them and the Western nations on the other hand. Notes.
