The Horn of Africa: from war to peace

This book summarizes the history of the Horn of Africa, Sudan, Ehtiopia and Somalia from earliest times to the 19th century and then concentrates on Russian and American involvements in the region. Developments following World War II, when Sudan and Somalia joined Ethiopia as independent States, form the core of the book. With extensive statistics, the author demonstrates how massive arms supply by the Soviet Union to each country in turn exacerbated relations between them and caused internal political and economic deterioration. Ethnic strife and insurgency are analysed in depth. The author sees development of a strong underground economy linking the whole region as a hopeful response to political deterioration. He concludes with two chapters offering prescriptions for political and economic recovery leading to restoration of peace and progress.
