The Possibility of Fertility Change in Modern Africa: A West African Case

The location of the study, Lagos, is a notable example of an area where social and economic transformation has been very considerable. To discern the relevance of changing social and economic configurations to fertility, a sociodemographic sample survey was undertaken in 1964. 596 currently married African women representing approximately one per cent of the married females over 15 years of age in Lagos at the time of the survey were interviewed. After examination of internal indicators of modernisation and transitional fertility values in the survey data follows discussion of the socio-economic class fertility differentials encountered. Ref., tables: 1. Zero order correlation (r) between socio-economic status and expected and ideal fertility; 2. Total children ever born per 100 married women by age and by selected socio-economic variables.
