The role of women in rural development in the segou region of mali

Discussion of the specific role of women in the development of the Segou Region in Mali, paying attention to the work of women in the traditional sector and in the cash crop sector. Both in the traditional sector and in the sector of commercial farming, modernization is occurring which has positive and negative repercussions. Until independence, women controlled interior commerce; after independence, cash crop farming was intensified and the commercialization of these products became the prerogative of the men. There are countertrends to this general situation of which several examples are presented. The author argues that rural development programmes must give as much importance to women as to men, and not tend, as was the case in the 1970s, to give priority to men. Notes.
