Abstract: | Dar-es-Salam is the main port and centre of commerce and industry in Tanzania. It has the largest concentration of people in the country and the city government has the heaviest responsibility of any local authority. The author, currently serving as a nominated city councillor, describes the Dar-es-Salaam city council, its structural organization and functions, the city directorate, the statutory committees and city departments (finance and administration, urban planning, health and social services, education and culture, public works, trade and economic affairs, human resources), and the relation of the Dar-es-Salaam city council to Government and Party. |
