Trends in African theatre

In this overview of current trends in African theatre and drama, the author first describes the dichotomy facing the playwright in choosing between an ethnic or an international drama; and then describes the process of turning the drama into literature, which includes also the process by which history itself is made the subject of drama. Next the author summarizes the arguments which oppose the provision of the many new, expensive structures for theatre recently built and considers who pays for theatre and what is the relationship between patrons and audience. Notes.
