Urban Structure and Development: The Urban System of Ghana

This study is directed specifically to the examination of urban centers in a developing economy. A multivariate analysis of urban attributes is employed to facilitate the identification of patterns of similarity and diversity among the centers. Of the population of Ghana nearly a quarter lives in settlements of over five thousand. The study utilizes basic data from the Ghanaian Census of 1960, from which the attributes of the centers are calculated. Patterns of association are established between these attributes through the use of correlation analysis. Finally, individual centers are discussed with respect to their factor scores. Parts of the article: Urban and economic integration – Principal components of Ghanaian urban structure – Factor interpretation – Structural correlates of the development process – Mapping of urban centers in factor space – A general interpretation of the factor structure – Summary. Notes; tables; figures.
