What Can Schools Contribute? The Challenge of Ethnic Conflict and National Integration in the Republic of Rwanda

The present article explores the terrain of ethnic conflict in Rwanda and proposes ways in which schools can be instrumental in preparing a generation of future citizens who may contribute to building a more peaceful world. The introduction is followed by a historical background to locate the discussion in context in which also the concept of ethnicity is operationalized and its meaning in dual societies highlighted. The next section of the article discusses the link between poverty and ethnic conflict. Also explored is the colonial school as a conduit of ethnic hatred. A way forward is suggested before offering some concluding remarks. Notes, ref.
