ABSTRACT

The effect of inorganic fertilizer treatment on the mineral and vitamin contents of the leaves of O. gratissimum (1) was investigated cultivated O. gratissimum in plastic planting buckets were applied with NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer and 500kg/ha treatment levels determined using the furrow slice methods two months after seed germination, only one application was carried out. The levels of the plants were harvested for analysis one month after treatment. Fertilizer treatment caused significant increase P. (0.05) in the potassium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorous and nitrogen contents of the leaves of O gratissimum.

However, fertilizer treatment led to significant reduction (P 0.05) in the calcium content of the leaves of O. gratissimum. Although fertilizer treatment generally caused increased concentration of ascorbic acid, such increases were not significant. Generally the concentration of minerals and vitamins tended to increase as the level of treatment increased.

CHEMICAL, FUNCTIONAL PASTING PROPERTIES OF STARCHES FORM BROWN AND YELLOW TIGER NUTS (CYPERUS, ESCULENTUS)

Volume, 28, November, 2011.

Abstract

Starch was extracted from brown and yellow varieties of tiger nuts, starch samples from both varieties were defatted and analysed for their functional, chemical and pasting properties using standard analytical methods. The conventional cassava starch served as the control. There were significant differences in chemical (moisture) ash, fat, protein, amylose and starch yield) and functional properties oil absorption capacity, bulk density and starch gel charity) between starch samples. Most pasting properties, oil absorption such as trough, peak viscosity breakdown, final viscosity, set back viscosity of tigernut starch samples were higher than those of cassava starch.

Nigeria Food Journal
Volume 28, November, 2011

ABSTRACT

Biscuits were prepared from – soybean composite flour based on preliminary works, the nutritional qualities of the products (biscuits) were evaluated using wistar-strain albino rat feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency Ratio (FER) Protein efficiency Ratio (PER) and proximate composition of the faces.

IMPACT OF BREAKFAST ON DAILY ENERGY INTAKE-ANALYSIS OF ABSOLUTE VERSUS RELATIVE BREAKFAST CALORIES

Nutrition Journal 17 January, 2011.

ABSTRACT

The role of breakfast energy in total daily energy intake is a matter of debate. Acute feeding experiments demonstrated that high breakfast energy leads to greater overall intake supported by cross sectional data of a free-living population. On the other hand, a large intra individual analysis has indicated that a high proportion of breakfast to overall intake is associated with lower daily energy intake. To evaluate these apparently contradictory results in greater detail both ways of analysis were applied to the same data set of dietary records.

THE CHALLENGES OF NUTRITION POLICY MAKING

BY

JOANNE L. SLAVIN
Nutrition Journal 7 February, 2014.

ABSTRACT

In my over three decades of work in the field of food and nutrition, I have participated in many efforts that seek new policy initiatives in the hopes that these programs can curb rates of obesity and chronic disease and help consumers make healthier dietary choices. Because of the profound effects that many of these policies have on consumers, the food environment, federal nutrition assistance programs and subsequent policy and regulatory recommendations, it is imperative that only the strongest best available evidence is used to set policy, This review evaluates methods by which current nutrition policies use scientific research as well as provides recommendations for how best to ensure future nutrition policies are truly science-based and likely to have a meaningful impact on public health.

SOCIOECONOMIC GRADIENT IN CONSUMPTION OF WHOLE FRUIT AND 100% FRUIT JUICE AMONG US CHILDREN AND ADULTS

BY

Adam Drewnowski, Colin O. Rehm
Nutrition Journal 17 December, 2014.

ABSTRACT

The consumption of fruit is generally associated with better health, but also higher socioeconomic status (SES). Most previous studies evaluating consumption of fruits have not separated 100% fruit juice and whole fruit, which may conceal interesting patterns in consumption.
Consumption patterns for whole fruit versus 100% fruit juice showed different gradients by race / ethnicity, education and income. The advice to replace 100% economically disadvantaged and some minority groups, whose frit consumption falls short of national goals.

Nutrition Journal 26 February, 2012.

ABSTRACT

Background aims dietary Omega -6 and omega – 3 fatty acids have remarkable impacts on the levels of DHA in the brain and retina low levels of DHA in plasma and blood hamper visual and neural development in children and cause dementia and cognitive decline in adults. The level of brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) changes with dietary omega – 3 fatty acid intake (BDNF) and known for its effects on promoting neurogenesis and neuronal survival. Methods in this study, we examined the effect of the oral consumption of a-linolenic acid (ALA) on blood levels of BDNF and malondialdehyde (MDA) in healthy adults humans. Thus, ALA could e used in adjunction with routine stroke therapies to minimize brain lesions caused by stroke.

LOWER HYPOGLYCEMIC BUT HIGHER ANTIATHEROGENIC EFFECTS OF BITTER MELON THAN GLIBENCLAMIDE IN TYPE 2 DIABETIC PATIENTS

Nutrition Journal 26 January, 2012

ABSTRACT

Since antiquity bitter melon has been in use for treating diabetes but clinical trials show conflicting results about its usefulness. The present study aims to assess and compare the hypoglycemic and anti atherogenic effects as well as the safety of two different doses of bitter melon with glibenclamide.
Our study concludes that bitter melon has a weaker hypoglycemic effects but ameliorats the diabetes associated cardiovascular (cv) risks factors more effectively than glibenclamide.

FOLATE, VITAMIN B12 AND HOMOCYSTEINE STATUS IN THE POST FOLIC ACID FORTIFICATION ERA IN DIFFERENT SUBGROUPS OF THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION ATTENDED TO AT A PUBLIC HEALTH CARE CENTER

Nutrition Journal 19 February, 2013.

ABSTRACT

Background folate and vitamin B12 are essential nutrients, whose deficiencies are considerable public health problems worldwide, affecting all age groups how levels of these vitamins have been associated with high concentrations of homocysteine (HCY) and can lead to health complications, several genetic polymorphisms affect the metabolism of these vitamins. The aims of this study were to assess folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine status in distinct Brazilian individuals after the initiation of folic acid fortification by Brazilian authorities and to investigate the effects of RFCA 8OG, polymorphisms on folate, vitamin B12 and HCY levels in these populations.

However, screening for vitamin B12 deficiency may be particularly relevant in our population, especially in the elderly.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN QUALITY OF THE DIET AND CARDIOMETABOLIC RISK FACTORS IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Nutrition Journal 22 December, 2014.

ABSTRACT

Climacteric is a phase of women’s life marked by the transition from the reproductive to the non-reproductive period. In addition to overall weight gain, the menopause is also associated with the increase of abdominal fat. We used the healthy-eating index as a summary measure to evaluate the major components and the quality of women’s diet after the onset of the menopause. This study aims at examining the association between the quality of the diet and cardiometabolic risk factors in post menopausal women.

Women consume a low quality diets, possibly due to the low intake of vegetables and fruits and excessive consumption of sodium. These inappropriate eating habits are associated with and have a negative impact on the cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal obesity.
