Chicago, April 4, 2023 — JAMA today announces the appointment of Atul Butte, M.D., Ph.D., to its editorial board.
An international leader in biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, and data analytics for health care, Dr. Butte is the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and inaugural Director of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF. He is also the Chief Data Scientist for the University of California Health System.
“I look forward to being an active contributor to the JAMA Editorial Board. I am excited by the new data and computational directions I see in biomedical research and practice, ranging from artificial intelligence to prescribable apps, and the increasing use of clinical data to generate real-world evidence,” said Dr. Butte. “JAMA has recently taken the lead on many topical issues facing medicine, including data sharing, public access, and chatbots. It will be gratifying to help further reinforce its leadership.”
Dr. Butte will join 16 leaders in medicine on the JAMA Editorial Board, whose members serve to provide ongoing advice and guidance on strategic direction for JAMA.
Dr. Butte will bring decades of experience in data analytics for health care to JAMA. He has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health for 25 years, is an entrepreneur and an inventor on 24 patents, and has authored over 300 publications.
Dr. Butte was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2015, and in 2013, he was recognized by the Obama Administration as a White House Champion of Change in Open Science for promoting science through publicly available data.
Dr. Butte trained in Computer Science at Brown University, worked as a software engineer at Apple and Microsoft, received his M.D. at Brown University, trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Boston, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
