Abstract

Employee’s interest on the job is an important and integral facet of Human Resources Management that for long has been neglected irrespective of the enormous role it has played and still playing on organizational productivity. This study examines employee’s interest on the job (IOJ) and productivity within the purview of practice in the Plateau State Government Internal Revenue Service (PIRS). The study adopted a combination of methods; first, we relied on secondary data drawn from an array of published and unpublished materials relevant to the study; utilizing journals, conference and seminar papers, internet materials, internet and handbooks of the organization. Secondly, primary data was generated using a two pronged participation method which combined key informant interview with observation. The structured interview enhanced precision while the unstructured interview enhanced diversity and allowed for in-depth discussion. In interpreting our data, the relationship between the Employee’s Interests on the Job was established at both theoretical and empirical level. Empirically, we used a qualitative and historical method that was critical and analytical in providing descriptive and historical details and providing clear perspective into our research problems. The study has established a linkage between Interest on the job and productivity in PIRS. The paper recommends that there should be adherence to recruitment base on the employee interest, need for suitable work place, non-interference by government in the recruitment process and many others were proffered.
